    Locale System

    Use Founder / Developer tabs in the docs sidebar to filter this page. Shared sections apply to both audiences.

    Ring Platform centralizes locale configuration in lib/locale-config.ts. One source drives routing, user preferences, SEO hreflang, static param generation, and the legacy browser gate. Message JSON is a second pipeline: cached Layer1 files, then optional pack and clone overlay (see Localization).

    Environment variables

    Comma-separated BCP-47 short codes must match folders under locales/. When the env list is empty, FALLBACK_SUPPORTED_LOCALES is en, uk, ru, es, de.

    What operators set

    • Supported locales on the clone env — users see those language switcher entries.
    • Default locale — unprefixed URLs (localePrefix: 'as-needed').
    • Copy — Layer1 strings, plus pack pack.json when presets.pack is set, plus clone overlay for brand leaves.

    You do not configure proxy rewrite separately from this env list. Auth still happens in layouts, not in the locale proxy.

    Import pattern

    Re-exports: i18n/shared.ts, lib/locale-pref.ts.

    Client navigation (canonical)

    • Never strip locale with regex on pathname in client components.
    • Use Link, useRouter, usePathname from @/i18n/routing.
    • Locale switch: persistRingLocalePreference(locale) + replaceLocalePath(router, pathname, locale) from lib/locale-pref.ts.

    Server / proxy

    • lib/proxy-intl.ts — shared helpers for localePrefix: 'as-needed'.
    • lib/seo-metadata.ts — pathnameWithoutLocale() for hreflang on raw URLs.
    • app/layout.tsx injects window.__RING_LOCALE_CONFIG__ for public/scripts/locale-tracking.js.

    Messages

    Translations load via i18n/request.ts → lib/i18n.ts buildMessages(locale, scope).
